The Story

Grounded in the belief that education is the foundation of future leadership in Africa, Teddies teacher of mathematics Henry Chitsenga has founded Nyanga North High School in Zimbabwe to provide orphaned and impoverished children with a first-class education. Mr Chitsenga and his charity Suchhope (short for Sub-Saharan Children’s Hope Trust) are now turning to the Teddies Community to help fund the shipping of educational resources to the school, so that pupils have access to the same state-of-the-art learning facilities as those found in the UK.

The Founder

Henry Chitsenga was born and grew up in Nyanga and now focuses Suchhope's projects on helping orphaned and under-privileged children of the district. He has taught mathematics at Teddies since 2007 and together with Teddies pupils has fundraised over £100,000 for Sabvure Primary School (which he attended as a child), the Mt Dangare Primary School and Chitakatira and Kute High Schools. He has now been given permission by Zimbabwe's Ministry of Education to found Nyanga North High School which is in its first stages of construction.

Suchhope is enormously grateful for the support of the Teddies community in making a real difference to the education of young people in Nyanga district.

How to Support

Suchhope are financing the shipping of a 40-foot container, filled with educational resources, from Oxford to Nyanga District. Steve Brimley, a recent enthusiastic supporter of the work of Suchhope, has pledged £7,500 towards shipping costs but an additional £2,500 is still to be raised. Additionally, an appeal has been launched to fill the container with text books, classroom furniture, workshop tools, science equipment and stationary. You can support either through donating good quality, 2nd hand items or through donating to fund their purchase.

A message from Suchhope:

'Although the container is our main immediate priority, we also hope to raise sufficient funds to enable the first building phase of the Nyanga North High School. We plan to build 6 workshops, 2 classroom blocks and 2 modest teachers houses. At current prices the cost of the bricks is £31,000. Donations towards this project would also be enormously appreciated.
